The beauty of working on natural stone is that we get to see amazing transformations as old, scuffed and dirty floors and stairs returned to pristine, clean and shiny, and this recent project is a perfect example. The Winsor school is a private prep school for girls that was opened in 1886 by Mary Pickard Winsor. Originally located in the Back Bay, it was relocated to its current location in the Longwood area in 1910. The main building is a stately red brick and houses a library, science labs, art studios, a gym and a swimming pool.
We were contracted to restore several stairways and landings in the main building. The slate stair treads were dirty and scuffed. Imagine all the footsteps that they have felt over the years! But after we carefully honed away the damage and dirt they look pristine. The terrazzo landings were also a mess. In certain areas piping was removed and we patch those holes and polish the floors. Once again, what was once dirty and dull is now clean and gleaming!
We love working in historic buildings and have a lot of respect for the original design and workmanship, we work hard to ensure the end result is consistent with the intended look and feel of the space by either the original design or by the updated use cases planned by interior designers and present-day architects.
As always, if you are an architect, interior designer or facilities manager working on a modern install or a historic natural stone surface, Boston Stone Restoration can help make sure the stone looks and performs to plan.
