From time to time we like to feature a recent project in our blog, this week we did a restoration on a filled travertine floor in Weston, MA.
Travertine, in its natural state, is covered with holes of varying shapes and sizes. Since travertine is formed in ancient sea beds, you can see where the water flowed in and out during its formation, you a also see where tiny creatures were trapped and fossilized making each piece truly unique. Although these holes are beautiful, they also provide a place for dirt to stick and so unless these holes are filled and sealed, it’s a very difficult surface to keep clean.
Our customer wanted a semi gloss finish. This was a challenge because the floor was scratched pretty severely so we needed to do quite a bit of deep grinding and then build the finish up little by little, being careful not to build it so much that the shine was too high.
In the end I think we got it just right ad so did the home owner!
