There was a great article in the Boston Globe this week about Consumer Reports’ take on different types of counter tops, ranging from marble, to granite to quartz. They all have different advantages and challenges. One thing that all homeowners should understand about natural stone is that they are not maintenance proof like Formica.
All natural stone is going to require some professional attention over time. The most important thing to remember is to use a pH neutral cleaner to prevent etching. Although sealer will help prevent staining it is important to wipe up all spills as soon as they occur.
Sealing will not prevent etching which is common on the softer, more porous marbles. Etching is caused by acidic solutions, lemon juice, wine, salad dressing etc. eroding the finish of your counter top. The only way for this to be corrected is by hiring a professional to re-hone (polish) the surface to remove the damage. At Boston Stone Restoration we are constantly looking for new products and services to make the care and cleaning of your natural stone easier.
Check back next month as we hope to roll out a new service that will do just that!!!
